Following Kelis’ meltdown, Pharrell Williams explains why he didn’t need her permission to clear "Milkshake" sample for Beyoncé...

The way Pharrell Williams dismisses Kelis in this new interview is quite jarring. Now we know all bridges have been burned and they will never work together again. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pharrell Williams was asked about Kelis’ meltdown over the ‘Milkshake’ sample on Beyoncé’s “Energy.” Kelis heavily criticised Beyoncé and Pharrell after the former released her “Renaissance” album, which initially featured an interpolation of “Milkshake” for her song “Energy.”

Kelis raged on that it was “ignorant” and “disrespectful” of Beyoncé to not reach out to her before adding the sample to her project, and accused Pharrell of stealing the publishing rights to the song among other things. As a result, Beyoncé quietly removed the sample altogether without publicly addressing Kelis or her remarks. Kelis is not credited as a writer on that song. She gets no royalties from it, but because she made it a "hit", she felt she deserved the acknowledgement. Getting that from someone like Beyoncé would have been a gift.

He is just answering the questions and stating facts I suppose. Anything he said would have been misconstrued one way or the other so why not keep the opportunity for that to happen as minimal as possible.

I thought this was already known! The word was that Milkshake was originally for Britney Spears!

Yeah, Pharrell had beef with Jive Records over The Clipse deal! So, Pharrell vowed to never work with Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake (2 of Jive's biggest artists at the time) & that's how Kelis ended up getting Milkshake over Britney!

Not sure what all the fuss was about tbh - the sample was barely there in the first place before it was removed.
