Doja Cat has gone on to become one of the biggest stars of the decade. But it almost didn't happen. While appearing on ‘The Manager’s Playbook’ podcast, Doja Cat’s manager Gordan Dillard reveals that there was talk of her being dropped from her label before she released ‘Hot Pink.’ That very album has gone on to being certified Double Platinum in the States. You hear stories like this all the time.
Mega stars like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys also came close to getting dropped from their respective labels. The difference with those artists is that they didn't have TikTok to save them. They had to go back to the drawing board the old fashioned way. But this shouldn't detract from Doja's talent, because she is in fact talented.
Dillard recalls:
There were talks of her dropping her before that… I remember we all went to New York and we sat down and played [RCA] the ‘Hot Pink’ album and she just had records. The girl knows how to make hits. And then we went… They knew she had big records but they also knew that she had the people behind her… people that understand music and have the relationships to be able to make this thing move outside of what they’re able to do… So then that’s when they started putting money into it.
That said, you normally wouldn't take an artist seriously after a song like "Moo" becomes viral!
