In a recent Instagram Live, Grammy-winning songwriter Tiffany Red went on a vent fest to blast mainstream artists for not correctly paying songwriters. Many hardworking songwriters do not get their fair compensation and this has influenced Red to set up The 100 Percenters organization, which is dedicated to the rights of music creatives.
When rapper Jay-Z called out The Recording Academy for never awarding his wife Beyoncé with ‘Album of the Year,’ Red hopped on Instagram to say this: “So, let me get this straight, Jay-Z expects Beyoncé to win ‘Album of the Year’ when all the songwriters that contributed to these albums are not compensated and she takes an obscene amount of publishing from all of them.” This discussion about Beyoncé isn't new though. In fact, this has been a topic of discussion for the past 15 years and it just keeps getting rehashed. Tiffany Red is fighting a very important fight and while her frustration is totally understandable, she has never written for Beyoncé. Of course people are going to think she is just using Beyoncé's name for clout.

Interestingly enough, Beyonce only got 5% of Crazy In Love, the song that ya'll say "birthed her career" even though she's earned more money WRITING Independent Women & Survivor! If anything, it took Rich Harrison from an in-house producer to commanding 6-figures per track & starting his own Production company "Richcraft!"
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with Tiffany Red's writing but like you said Toya, she's never written for Bey, so how would she know the publishing splits?
You don’t have friends that work for different companies? Hers have worked for Bey and are bound by NDA, so they can’t talk publicly, but just because they are doesn’t mean she is. My friends and I talk about our jobs all the time. It’s not that ridiculous to fathom.
DeleteI’m sorry , but it’s very funny how people pick and choose what’s right and wrong. The same people that are attacking tiffany in the comments/not agreeing with her are the same people believing lies that Twitter spread that jlo never paid Ashanti/christina millian & more when that has been debunked multiple times from their own mouths! It’s just funny that I had to add that in there because there is no video of them going off like my girl Tiffany is doing now. True tea, Tiffany probably won’t win this fight as she is going up against important people , but I’m with her! The music business is shady af
ReplyDeleteUnpopular opinion: let’s look at the math. Songwriters get penny's from songs in the streaming era. Solution: remove Beyoncé’s 25% cut to get them to earn more? Penny’s + 25% are still penny’s. Maybe the solution is to simply face the fact that writing songs isn’t a profitable business as it used to.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely No-One In The Music Industry Will Accept A Song Written By Her Now.
ReplyDeleteInstead of speaking on someone she has never worked with, why didn't she mention the names of people that she has? It makes no sense. Beyoncé has worked many some of these songwriters for many years, and they have no problems with the arrangement of pay,
ReplyDeleteBeyoncé fans stay idolizing her. Y’all need Jesus.
