Leona Lewis suffered a major knock to her confidence when she was diagnosed with autoimmune disorder Hashimoto’s disease. She fell ill during a stint in Broadway musical 'Cats' back in 2016 and was later diagnosed with the disease which affects the thyroid gland and can cause chronic fatigue and hair loss. In an exclusive interview with i newspaper, she reveals it got so bad, she would wake up in the middle of the night unable to breathe. Leona admits the health scare prompted her to take a step back from the spotlight.
From i newspaper:
“I think it was a build-up,” she says. “I had just not looked after myself how I probably should have. Body-wise, spiritually, mentally, physically, I just felt I was done. I needed to just go and look after myself.” It partly explains why the 38-year-old has been keeping a lower profile over recent years. “I think my confidence got a little bit knocked as well,” she says of the ordeal’s effect on her ability to perform.
There’s been no new studio album since 2015’s "I Am" and when probed she says she just hasn’t felt like she wanted to put out a whole body of work yet. However, if ever she decides to, she would probably do it independently under her own terms. Welp. Sounds like she is done with music and is just happy to go on annual Christmas tours like her idol Mariah and be a mommy to her one-year-old daughter. The tour, titled "Leona Lewis: Christmas with Love" kicks off tonight (November 28th) at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham.
