The biggest bombshell is that in late 2000, Britney Spears discovered she was pregnant at 18 and had an abortion. This was done because her then boyfriend Justin Timberlake, 19, did not want to be a father. Britney would have kept the baby if she had support from Justin. She revealed this in an excerpt from her upcoming memoir 'The Woman in Me,' partially serialised by PEOPLE. Crazy to think that if she did go ahead with the pregnancy that child would have been 22-years-old. But if she had the baby, her career trajectory would have looked so MUCH different. She would not have had the career she had if she became a teen mom. Keeping the baby would most likely have been career suicide. During that time she was the golden IT girl of pop music who famously claimed she was "saving" herself for marriage. For years, Britney told interviewers that she was a virgin and planned to remain one until her wedding night.
Can you imagine the meltdowns and media scrutiny if she kept the baby or if it EVER got out that she was pregnant? Her sister Jamie Lynn gave birth to daughter Maddie when she was 17-years-old and was told she would "never work again" when she got pregnant at the age of 16. Britney's team wanted her to keep the good girl image and so, at 18, she had to make a traumatic decision. It certainly explains why she went into full rebellion mode afterwards.
Britney's memoir, 'The Woman in Me,' drops on October 24th.
