Prior to updating the certifications of just two Mariah Carey albums this week, the RIAA has documented the singer as the first female artist to sell over 70 million albums in the United States. This is now an historic record that no other female artist has managed to achieve. She now sits at #12 on the list of best album sellers in American history behind iconic legends such as Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Elton John, and Pink Floyd. She has also sold 49.5 million digital singles, a Gold certification away from becoming the first female artist of her era to sell 50 million or more digital singles. The only artist, male or female, who has sold more is the late Michael Jackson.
This is awesome. Perhaps such an achievement can now shake away some people downgrading her work to "the one who sings the Christmas song," or people assuming her relevancy has now been restricted to Christmas only.
