Beyoncé certainly brought on the tsunami with the release of her new album ❝Renaissance❞ over the weekend (I'll address the Kelis drama in a separate post.) But I find her roll-out to be a bit weird to be honest. She drops this new house record, and announces her album five weeks before the release, but then she drops no music video? Huh? Where is the motherfuggin video for 'Break My Soul'?! And what on earth has happened to visual Queen Beyoncé? Didn't she sign a mega $60 million three-project deal with Netflix?
Of those three projects, we got 'Homecoming,' a 2019 concert film about her epic performance at the 2018 Coachella festival. So why isn't she using this Netflix tie-in to plug her album with an array of visuals like she did with Disney and 'Black Is King?' Her album roll-outs are usually so pristinely thought-out and well coordinated, that this era just comes across as very lazy and lapse. Beyoncé's star power is still huge, but not to the extent that it was a decade ago. She needs to realise that she can't just drop an album and there's nothing else to back it up. Perhaps she was relying on her name alone to generate those first week album sales and I don't want to bring up the struggles a female artist has to go through once turning 40. However, the music industry is in fact age bias. Therefore, promotion will always be key no matter WHO you are, hence why her first week sales predictions is teetering on the lacklustre side. The album is projected to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 275-315k units. Out of that number, only 125k-155k are PURE sales, with the rest coming from streams only.
She could have kept some of those satanic-riddled pics. She just doesn’t give a shit does she lol. I don’t think she cares about sales, putting out a video etc - Remi.
ReplyDeleteOnly Beyoncé can sell 300K (on par with DIL & 4) with no promotion, videos, or performances and someone classifies it as low first week. For this to be be her first real album in the streaming era and the climate of the music industry these numbers are very respectable. It’s already on pace to be the biggest first week sales for a woman of 2022.
ReplyDeleteClearly she was content with whatever the outcome was gonna be or she would have put some effort in promotion or at least gave a visual. It appears, she really could care less and just wants to release her art. That being said, Break My Soul is challenging for #1 on the Billboard Hot 100! So stream and buy. She obviously doesn’t care about the charts but I would love to see it ;)
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous, Renaissance is NOT on par with 'DIL' and '4' sales wise. Those albums sold those numbers PURELY on REAL sales where people actually went out and PAID for those albums. No streams. An artist of Beyoncé's calibre should be selling a lot more than 125K. Even 300K in pure sales would have been respectable. Let's not make excuses now.
ReplyDeleteNo excuses, I’m fully aware those were real sales but it takes 1500 streams to equal just 1 album sale. So in essence, although easier to access it’s even harder to put numbers on the board with streams. Riddle me this outside of Bey who of her female peers (outside of Adele and Taylor, whom she was never gonna outsell regardless) is putting up these numbers in this climate. With once again not an ounce of real promotion. Not a one, hence why she’s on track to have the biggest first week for a woman this year. This music industry as a whole is in trash can with the exception of Hip Hop and few select artist in terms of sales. You can not compare the music landscape of 2013 or 2016 to 2022 and expect anything similar. So again, these numbers are very respectable.

ReplyDeleteThe album isn’t that great. Maybe one or 2 good songs but every track sounds like it’s predecessor and that instantly always turns me off from the entire album. I miss the DIL/BDay days.
