It has been 18 years since Justin Timberlake "accidentally" exposed Janet Jackson's breast to 140 million viewers at the 2004 Super Bowl. Unforgivingly, he left her to take the sole brunt of the blame without coming to her defence. And while his career soared, hers took a major beating. However, Janet Jackson insists she and Justin are currently ❝very good friends.❞
She made the statement in her double episode Lifetime and A&E documentary ❝Janet.❞ Speaking of the scandal, she said, ❝Honestly, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion. And, of course, it was an accident that should not have happened, but everyone is looking for someone to blame and that's got to stop. Justin and I are very good friends, and we will always be very good friends. We spoke just a few days ago. He and I have moved on, and it's time for everyone else to do the same.❞
Accident? The costume was clearly designed to expose the goods alongside the premeditated, ❝have you naked by the end of this song.❞ No one is buying her insistence that this was still just an accident. I totally understand why she won't admit to it though. Can you imagine all that negative press starting back up again while trying to release new music and go on tour? And to an extent, I suppose she's protecting him too, although he doesn't deserve it (because he sure as hell didn't protect her when she needed it most.) I watched all four parts of this documentary and was actually disappointed that all parties that contributed to her downfall did not get the deserved vilification. We saw the aftermath and repercussions SHE had to deal with, but no one was really held accountable for how she was treated long after.
Janet said Justin offered to make a statement and she advised him not to say anything. I'm not saying it's right, as a friend it could be argued that he should have insisted on doing so, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and perhaps he didn't expect it to go as far as it did. I'm glad she's forgiven him - the whole thing was ridiculous and rooted in misogyny. Loved the documentary.
ReplyDeletePS never knew Stevie Wonder is her third cousin
ReplyDeleteFrom their mom's side apparently. She mentioned it in 2011 that they were cousins but I only found out about it 3 years ago. I just find it odd that this has been so overlooked and it was only publicized after Michael's passing. She said her family are also related to Tracy Chapman as well. Small world.
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth does she protect him like that???
ReplyDeleteWas his verse from Give it to me not directed at her??
Justin is no good in my book.
