Continuing the promo trail for her Aretha Franklin biopic 'Respect,' Jennifer Hudson is gracing the cover and pages of Ebony magazine's September issue. The cover story is mostly centred around the film, which has been drawing mixed reactions. Though some journalists have touted it an "Oscar-worthy" performance. There is even some buzz about a possible win. I have not watched the biopic, and I'm in no rush to do so. Hudson has played variations of the same character in every acting role she's ever had. When we see more range from her as an actress, then we can talk. Check out the cover story here if you missed it.

As a (supreme) singer above all else, she is naturally deemed a better fit for musical projects and receives wider attention for these. No different to Barbara Streisand, Bette Midler and Whitney Houston et al. She can't be faulted for playing to her strengths - Hollywood thrives on archetypes, even in 2021.
Even so, albeit sometimes been miscast, she has actually demonstrated a lot of variety within her acting roles. A few examples:
-a war veteran with PTSD (Call Me Crazy)
-Winnie Mandela (Winnie Mandela)
-a troubled, drug addicted mother (The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete)
-Angela Wright - real life colleague of a Supreme Court Judge, Clarence Thomas, who was accused of sexual harassment (HBO's 'Confirmation)
It's unlikely she'll win another Oscar for 'Respect', but I'm sure the buzz is deserved and it'll be nice to see her nominated again. I look forward to watching the film.
