Sean Paul reflects on the time Jay Z allegedly blocked him from performing ‘Baby Boy’ with Beyoncé at the MTV Video Music Awards back in 2003.
It was widely reported Jay Z was jealous that his then-girlfriend (now wife) might become attracted to the dance hall superstar.
In an earlier live performance at the MTV EMAs, Beyoncé had gyrated on Paul much to the crowds delight, which more then likely left Jay Z reeling and triggering off the rapper's jealousy.
Almost a decade ago, Paul actually dismissed the feud as just "rumours," probably to avoid any backlash. But today is a different story. In a recent interview with Radio Jamaica, Paul says he used diplomacy after coming to the realization that Jay-Z did “not want him anywhere near Beyoncé.” The entire interview is in hardcore patois so I've translated some of it below.
Speaking with radio announcer Wesley “Burgerman” Burger:
Not surprising. Paul was attractive and quite the heart throb in those days. Needing to add 'Baby Boy' was an early hit for the Destiny's Child superstar after she went solo. The song spent several weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 helping to propel Paul’s global profile.

I loved baby boy, I also loved the song he did with Kelly rowland "How deep is your love"....
Haha, you're right he was everywhere! Then he collaborated with Blu Cantrell on 'Breathe' and that blew up too. A number 1 UK smash!

The nerve of him to cheat... when she could have had any man she wanted. He knew this too.
