Ciara wanted to perform something brand new at the American Music Awards on Sunday (she'll be hosting it for the first time). So she dropped a bouncy new song called 'Melanin' and it features Lupita Nyong’o, Ester Dean, City Girls, and LA LA. Seems Ciara tends to forget that most of her fans are adults, because this new song sounds like it could be on a children’s soundtrack. It also sounds like a shitty attempt at a 90s throwback. Camp, and very dated. Not to mention people are only going to think she is just piggy backing off of Beyoncé's 'Brown Skin Girl', which shares the exact same message (celebrating and empowering young brown and dark skinned women to embrace their features.) Bey shouted out Lupita in her anti-colorism anthem, whereas Ci decided to up the stakes and add Lupita to hers.
It's a good message. But the actual song is kinda on the naff side. At the same time, it's kinda cute for a 3-year-old. Sienna probably loved it, which is why our ears are within reaching distance at this time. Oh well. At least she is having fun following the release of her 'Beauty Marks' album back in May. Ester Dean produced it, so no surprises that the song appeared on Ester's EP 'My Name Is Susie' a few months ago.
