“I think that Adele won because she can sing, sing” he says. “With all respect to our sister Beyoncé, Beyoncé is very beautiful to look at and it’s more like modeling kind of music ― music to model a dress ― she’s not a singer, singer, with all respect to her.”
He adds: “Adele can sing, sing. She doesn’t bring all the dancers and props, she can just stand there and she just stood there and sang the song and that’s it, and this is why she wins.”
He clearly felt some way after Adele said on stage that she couldn't possibly accept her Grammy Award because she felt Beyoncé deserved Album of the Year for 'Lemonade.' I totally understand what he's saying but don't fully agree with it. He put it nicely that she's a "smoke and mirrors" type of artist, and while her showmanship may not be parallel to someone like Michael Jackson, her status as an ENTERTAINER (and not a "singer's singer") does not warrant her talent to be overlooked like that.
Before '4' was considered a commercial failure (it really wasn't as it still sold a milli), she was less thirsty to follow trends (Rihanna, for instance.) However, she proved time and time again that she could just stand there and sing the hell out of a ballad (without the aid of dancers and props.) I also think she's getting downplayed because she lives up to the ideal pop star image. Sexy physique. Gorgeous looks. Soooooo, because she looks and dresses a certain way, and puts on a show for fans, she's considered the lesser artist.
Not fair!
